A decade ago, my grandmother had her bathroom remodeled to accommodate a walk in shower.  The purpose behind this wasn’t to achieve a fantastic, top model bathroom-come-wet-room, but for her to actually be able to take a shower independently and keep her privacy, as well as dignity, for as long as possible.   How times have changed!  Now it’s not just the elderly and / or disabled who are looking for walk-in shower facilities – contemporary couples are now remodeling their bathroom fittings to obtain that walk-in luxury, and here’s a few good reasons why:

  • A walk in shower enclosure can make great use of every corner in an awkwardly shaped bathroom.  Clever, contemporary designs that take every inch of space into account mean that a shower cubicle can be accommodated into most bathrooms, or a shower room can be created in a space little wider than a cupboard!
  • Installing a door-less walk-in shower is the quick way to eliminate the demand for space that comes with having shower doors.  Freeing up this space by just walking into your shower could leave you with room for other sanitary-ware in a small space, or simply offer a real comfort-sized shower space without that closed-in feeling – this can be particularly important if disability is an issue or if you like to save water by showering with a partner and so need the space for two!  The installation of a door-less unit can also transform a cramped shower room into a contemporary wetroom, at little extra cost.
  • We now live in the age of the en-suite.  Where there are not enough rooms to accommodate this, many families choose to obtain extra bathroom space by incorporating a walk-in shower into a bedroom design.  In this instance, shower doors can serve two purposes: offering privacy whilst also clearly separating the two areas of the room.  Where this is the case, the best shower door options to be considered should include:

*    bi-fold shower doors: these fold across the aperture when open, or

*    sliding shower doors, which simply slide across.

Either of these mechanisms can be particularly helpful in this instance, as there is no hinged door to swing out and drip across the bedroom floor, whilst the lack of a door which opens outwards also means that the shower as a whole seems to take up much less space in the room!  Most bathroom hardware retailers stock a range of designs of either type, some being particularly funky and arty, extremely useful if you are looking for something that appeals more to the decoration of a bedroom rather than a bathroom.

Lastly, it’s worth considering that, a decade ago when my grandmother made the change, she was advised that having a shower room was considered a ‘poor relation’ to a bathroom and that she should change it back if she ever wanted to sell her property!  What a contrast to today where, with the contemporary range and demand for luxury walk-in shower designs, a shower room that boasts a walk-in shower can be a real asset when selling your home, as well as fulfilling your space and sanitary needs!
